Lakeshore Ski Club kicked off its ski season with a trip to Ironwood, Michigan/Hurley, Wisconsin. The conditions were challenging, but ten of Lakeshore’s hardiest had a wonderful time on the trails at the Anderson Bluffs and River (ABR) foundation area on the outskirts of Ironwood. The snow was abundant and the trails were impeccably groomed.
The temperatures were a bit chilly -12 degrees Fahrenheit for being on the cross-country skiing and snowshoe trails, but the first day was sunny with no wind. The second day of skiing reached -1 degrees. The downhillers on the trip joined us on the trails after considering the temperatures and risks of being stuck on a chairlift at the nearby Powderhorn Ski area.
We are happy to report that we found several, excellent restaurants in Ironwood/Hurley: Don & GG’s and the Iron Nugget restaurants provided excellent evening fares; and the Breakwater and Pine Street Café are great for breakfast. All the dining spots were within a mile of our 1950’s style motel. The Indianhead motel is a great bargain for a low price, and kept the trip price quite low, and the new ownership was very responsive to our needs.
